Health Care

As we grow older, health care becomes more and more important to us.  Macon County is fortunate to have Macon County General Hospital in Lafayette.  MCGH is a twenty-five bed Critical Access Hospital.  The hospital is a member of the American Hospital Association and the Tennessee Hospital Association. Macon County General Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.  MCGH provides emergency-room services, mobile M.R.I., state-of-the-art C.T. services, rehabilitation services, and much more.

Our neighboring communities of Lebanon and Carthage also have hospitals.  Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin is a 145-bed hospital providing quality care in cancer treatment, cardiac care, same day surgery, orthopedics, diagnostics, women’s health, rehabilitation services and much more.  SRMC is one of the leading hospitals in Tennessee for hip and knee replacements, and is one of only three hospitals in Tennessee offering computerized alignment of DePuy Rotating Platform Knees.

Of course, only an hour from Macon County is Nashville.  Nashville is considered the medical center of the south with world-class hospitals such as Vanderbilt, St. Thomas, Baptist Hospital, Centennial, Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, Skyline and others.

Helicopter Service

In the event of an emergency that cannot be handled locally, Air Evac Lifeteam (pictured above) provides helicopter service from Lafayette directly to Nashville.  As a matter of fact, the Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter is based in Lafayette.

Public Transportation

For routine trips to the doctor or hospital, the Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency provides the Upper Cumberland Area Rural Transit System (UCARTS) van service.  UCARTS provides a driver and a shared van which will take passengers anywhere within Macon County or to and from places like Nashville, Lebanon, Cookeville and Gallatin.  There is a small charge to ride the van, but it is extremely reasonable.  The UCARTS vans are, of course, wheelchair-accessible.  The van will pick you up at home, take you to your appointment, pick you up after the appointment, and return you home.  How easy is that!
